I've been drawing a lot of inanimate objects lately for work and felt I was beginning to forget how to draw people. I made a little photoshop painting of a superjail character to jump back into the groove.

venture BGs pt2

The first BG assignment I had on Venture Brothers was taking this sketch design of the Sphinx training room, drawn by Chris Palesty and creating the following tonal for the background painter to use.



Using the vanishing point, I was instructed to use the line tool to draw all my lines and fill them with different values of gray using the paint bucket. I built the BG in layers in case Chris disapproved of anything. Ironically, the one thing he disapproved of was using many layers.



Finally, Chris added the guns on the gunrack.

White Wolf

When I was in SF in May, we were talking about storyboarding a music video for the White Wolf song Greg and Don produced. First it was suppose to be a live action thing starring yours truely, though that never got off the ground. We did a sketch session and these were my few drawings. Not quite what Greg was going for, though.

Clonan Storyboard

I wanted to post this board I completed for the Clonan idea using the Futurama/Simpsons style. There are a couple things I will add in the next day or two to polish it up as a portfolio piece, like notes and a camera move. the BGs might come down a bit too.

Superjail! Character Layout "Best Friends Forever"

"Best Friends Forever" was the first episode of season 2 that was animated entirely in NYC. It was the 3rd episode we produced at Titmouse. Throwing this episode into the season 2 premiere was somewhat of a curveball for the fans. It was a statement decrying we were taking season 2 in a different direction. Some of the fans accepted this direction, while others did not. I had a blast working with Christy and the rest of the Superjail crew and wait patiently for news of season 3. here are some of my layouts from "Best Friends Forever".

Robotomy Vs Horrorbots

In October 2009, I worked as a character designer on a show, tentatively called "Horrorbots" with Superjail! creator, Christy Karacas. I worked with a few other very talented individuals all around... BG design team was solid. the board guys and gals were great. the color team was rad. the show looked great.

we ran into a few snags here and there. we couldnt use "Horrorbots" as the title, because apparently Marvel owns the word or suffix "bots". The production landed on the name "Robotomy".

All in all, I think the show screened well, but alas, like many shows, this one didnt get picked up for a second season.

Here are some of the designs I contributed to the show.

The Hardstuff - The Hulk

Over the last couple of years... basically since I moved to NY in early 2009, I started working on this animated music video for the Hulk song I wrote and recorded with my buddies back in SF and Berkeley.

When I moved to NYC, I enrolled in the continuing ed program at SVA to take some lessons in storyboarding and animation. that semester culminated in the beginning of this music video. Initially drawn by hand on paper and a light disk, I scanned the pages and inked them in flash while at my internship at World Leaders producing Venture Brothers. From there, I moved away from drawing on paper, to drawing on the Cintiq.

In my free time for the last 2 years, I would add a scene, finish another and solicit my friends for they're ideas of Hulk Smashing. The goal was to have the Hulk represented in many styles, as comics are often drawn and stylized by many artists. Although I didn't get as many submissions as I had liked, some of my good friends did come though for me.

As I moved closer to finishing the project, both my skills as a layout artist and animator improved. I focused mostly on the character layout and animation while the backgrounds didn't get as much love as I would have liked. although, I did get some instrumental help early on on the BG's from my good friend John Latham.

This is the first animated short I've produced in full. Currently I am gearing up for another music video, however I hope it won't take 2 years to post it on this blog.

Venture BGs Pt1

Back when I interned on Venture Brothers, I did some tonals for the BG artists. BG supervisor George Fort entrusted me with this massive challenge of the NY cityscape. He provided me with the sketch design below, which had the main building drawn out, though the background buildings were rough and it was up to me to tighten the design.



George took the time and care to make sure the central building was complete before passing the job to me, so I can't take credit for the "Impossible Building and Plaza", though all the other buildings, streets and sidewalks were created by me. He gave me some photo reference of the city, and I picked a few landmarks to detail, while other buildings were left to my imagination. I learned some great perspective tricks from that internship and devised a few of my own.

I initially intended to contribute this little 8x10 to the white elephant gift swap at titmouse this past Xmas but didn't finish in time. I decided to gift it to Christy on his birthday instead.

Brooke "commissioned" this little illustration portrait for her sister Keira as a christmas present. It was nice to get back into painting again.

ROBOTOMY

Tune into Cartoon Network this Monday for the Robotomy premiere at 8:45.

I designed characters and props for the show. It's a fun show with lots of robot destruction for almost all ages.

Titmouse Bloggin'

Baeolophus is a genus of bird, commonly known as titmice in the Paridae family, all of which are native to North America. In the past, most authorities retained Baeolophus as a subgenus within the genus Parus, but treatment as a distinct genus, initiated by the American Ornithologists Union, is now widely accept

Starting Superjail today!!!

Finally, after being pushed back 2 weeks for some reason, I started my new job today. I am totally excited to get back to work doing what I love and what I do best... Making Cartoons! Before i took the Superjail test, i sketched out some "like" characters in my sketchbook to mentally prepare myself.
