so-so bots

I came up with a few robot designs for my work assignment this week that just didn't get the thumbs up, but i liked them. i know they wont ever be used, so i thought i might share them here until i get in trouble.

D&D design contest submission.

Last month, i entered a fun little contest to design Reis, the geek blogger of Geek Orthodox, into a D&D character, using a the little knowledge i assumed of his personality. I had no idea what the competition would be like, but was fairly confident id get into the running with my drawing skills. as for the back story and whatnot... i just tried to make it a little tongue in cheek. With the help of my friends and strangers, i won the contest in a vote-off.

here is my full submission, yet it was abridged over at Geek Orthodox...

the grand prize is a near-mint vintage D&D LJN action figure, which i once owned as a young geek, and now will own again as an adult geek.

Some more Crashstronauts...

Here are some more character design stuff from the Crashstronauts. First, some heads and hands from Neckbeard...

...and secondly, a turnaround for the superspy Bionic Sev. He is all man where it counts.

Crashstronauts!

I have been working on some character turnarounds for my Crashstronauts comic (previously known as the Hashstronauts) I published with Wahab, a while back, hoping to revitalize my interest in getting it off the ground (so to speak). A cartoon series would be great.

Neckbeard - Captain of the Rice Pirates.

The Chimpmanzees - The manufactured pop-band.

Captain Waximus - Captain of the Crashstronauts

Brood Vein, the Batbarian

I saw a Character Design contest on Geek-Orthodox and the grand-prize piqued my interest. I had seen, previously a posting about some oldschool D&D action figures recently won on epay, and remembered fondly, owning the figures as a kid. Apparently the grand prize is some of these figures. So I dug up a character design I started sketching a while back, that seemed to be appropriate, and polished it up a bit. hopefully it wins me a stroll down memory lane.

I am likeing watercolors, lately

Lately, I have been dabbling into watercolors to accent some of my drawings. I did a little bit in my molskine sketchbook, and a few cards. One for my girlfriend for her birthday, and she "commissioned" me to do this one just this week.

Superjail styled Punk

I am trying to bend my style into established styles. Superjail is starting up soon, and although I don't think there are any positions open, I would like to work on that show. Anyway, i think this works... only thing missing is some rad tattoos.

Sketch Illustrations

My friend Jan-Michael asked me to supply him with some Illustrations for a report he was giving for one of his MBA classes. Being that he asked me so nicely, I did comply. These didn't take much time at all, anyway (as you could probably tell).

Greek-ish Character Turnaround

I did this character turnaround for a tutorial on one of my other blogs. The idea was to create a simple character based on some quick shapes I sketched loosely on a template using a wacom tablet. I finished inking it and added colors in photoshop.

Steroid Fishman Turnaround

So I took my fishman design, and simplified it a bit. I was thinking in the vein of "Adventure Time". Then I created a turnaround of the character.

Steroid Fish Man!

Just a weird character I sketched after my strange He-man. I cleaned it up and colored for fun. I may try to redesign him in a different style.

Character Turnaround for Ghost Robot

While an intern on Venture Bothers, I was privileged to take the character design test. From a list of names for characters, I chose to design Ghost Robot. The episode with the REAL Ghost Robot just aired this season, so I think I can finally post this.

I colored it just to spruce it up a bit.

Again, when I did the test, I hadnt worked an hour on the show. after my time on this last season inking characters and creating tonals for backgrounds, I think I would approach it a bit differently.

Adventure Twins!!!

A while back I did a character design test for a certain Cartoon Network show. These two designs were for the same character. Since I last posted these designs, I fixed some of the problems with proportions and added color, which does the trick!

Drink And Drawing.. Dec 2009

Here are my sketches from Drink N Draw in the middle of last month. I just decided to keep it simple this first time and stay with a familiar subject... people watching. These sketches are of other Drink n Drawers. I hope to attend this event monthly and post my drawings a little sooner... however, this time the Holidays kept me quite busy and was the cause of the Delay.

Juggers

The other night i went to a bar and saw an ol' timey band with full on washboard percussions. all they needed was a guy on a jug. A guy on a jug like this fella. i have decided to post the 3 stages of the illustration 1)Sketch 2)Inks and 3)colors.

Nacho Hobo

Here's an old design of a Hobo i like. My technique on these characters has been refined since i inked this guy, and might re-ink him properly, someday . I did add colors to bring out the beauty in his knee caps. I envision this guy one of 4skin 4arms' buddies.

Just warming up for my Meckaneck Illustration for the Hardstuff Album.

...AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!!!

I sketched a goofy He-Man today while waiting for the design meeting and colored it after work.

(NOTE: I posted this image earlier and noticed a design error... that his axe hand wasnt angled correctly to his arm... thus i changed the arm to suit the pronated hand.)

Hobo Hammers

A few weeks ago, I saw a hobo on the street...

(actually, i am not sure if he was an actual hobo, but he was sitting on a milk crate next to a street table with misc. junk for sale... and again, i am not sure what his actual relationship with this table was, but i just assumed he was a hobo by the looks of him.... anyway...)

...and i thought he had a pretty striking outfit. i put the combo to memory hoping to get some free time at work to sketch him out. Well, i didnt... but a few days later, i remembered him and did have some time to doodle.

i cant remember exactly what the guys face was like, though i think he had a hobobeard. it didnt matter, what mattered was the hood and vest combo which was striking, as the hood's drawstring was pulled firm about his face and his vest zipped up as he huddled on a milk crate.

this here be my homage to said hobo...

Some MacroVu art from September

My client in SF hired me to do a batch of illustrations for one of his poster projects. Here are a few samples.

Sketches + Color = todays post

I am trying to make an effort to keep this blog relevant, by posting something every week. I am finding very little time to flex my creative muscles outside of my 5 day work week, though it is not impossible to get some stuff out.

i revisited my claim to post pages of my moleskine F-train sketchbook. these sketches are not exclusively of the f-train, though most have been... either studies/reference from passengers or from my imagination. this week, i am posting a drawing of a guest speaker from my producing for animation class, i took early this year, and secondly, an F-train passenger.

i took a little time this weekend to color them in photoshop.

more to come, eventually.

Colonel of the MWDefense Marines

I have a project on the burner for Force Galxia, called the Milkey Way Defense Marines. I plotted a story for Andre Owens, and he wrote his characters in. here is one of the characters he asked me to design.

Barbarian sketch.

Sometimes, it seems, you feel like you just can't draw worth shit. sometimes, thats because you switched pencils and / or paper and the chemistry just isnt working out. that is how i felt this morning (actually this whole weekend). coming in to work, i sketched a little warm up painting in photoshop. i cant say its awesome, but i think i just shook out the bugs in my drawing hand.

Like-ness?

One thing missing in my portfolio (for years now) is likenesses. I have had a few portfolio reviews from character design recruiters and have had a few artists comment on this aspect to me in the past, and it had been something i always intended on getting around to do. Recently i got a new moleskine sketchbook (the only souvenir i took from my short stint as a retail clerk at Dick Blicks art store) and decided to dedicate it to likenesses of Politicians and Celebrities. These are the first six from that sketchbook.
The paper weight is pretty heavy in this sketch book. I want to try my hands at adding some color to the sketches with some water color, marker and caran d'ache. most of this set, though, were colored in photoshop.
